Nhlanhla Nhlapho

Who is Nhlanhla?

Nhlanhla Nhlapho was born and raised in Namahadi Frankfort in Free State – which is a fundamental site of his work because it informs it distinctly, hence the “Free (State)” concept. Nhlapo plays with the Politics of the ‘Self’ – an exploration of his personal History in an African and Global context. The Artist draws inspiration from 17th Century Dutch Landscape paintings, Portraits and photographs from his family photo albums and the immediate surroundings of his hometown Frankfurt in the Free State.

Nhlanhla consistently invites us to engage the black subject in ways that encourage us to extend our emotional and imaginative engagement, to recognize personal and collective political issues that black people are constantly confronted with – the psychic trauma and transformation of a [post-] nation.

He is a Tshwane University of Technology graduate in (BA) Fine Arts, further having worked as a 2013 First year’s mentor for painting and 2014 First year’s part-time tutor in the same insitution
